Edwards penalized for infractions in Las Vegas

Daytona Beach, FL (Sports Network) - Carl Edwards and his Roush Fenway Racing team were saddled with serious penalties and fines on Wednesday for violations that were discovered during a post-race inspection at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 2.

NASCAR determined the cap on Edwards' oil tank was missing after the driver won Sunday in Las Vegas for his second-straight Sprint Cup victory.

Edwards was labelled guilty of actions detrimental to stock car racing; having a car, car parts, components and/or equipment used that do not conform to NASCAR rules; and having any device or duct work that permits air to pass from one area of the interior of the car to another.

Edwards and car owner Jack Roush were both docked 100 championship driver and championship owner points, respectively.

The penalty drops Edwards from first in the Sprint Cup standings with 491 points to seventh with 391.

Also, if Edwards qualifies for the "Chase for the Championship," he will not receive the 10 bonus points for the UAW-Dodge 400 victory.

In addition to the deductions for Edwards and Roush, crew chief Bob Osborne was fined $100,000, suspended from the next six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events, suspended from NASCAR until April 30 and placed on probation until December 31.
