A's select Smith; designate Johnson for assignment

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics selected left- handed pitcher Greg Smith from Triple-A Sacramento Wednesday. To accommodate the roster move, the club designated first baseman Dan Johnson for assignment.

Smith made one start for Sacramento this year, on April 3 at Tacoma. He allowed two runs on six hits in six innings, but was dealt the loss. The 24- year-old Smith was one of six players acquired from Arizona in the Dan Haren trade on December 14 and will be making his Major League debut as he takes the ball on Wednesday against Toronto.

Johnson appeared in just one game with the A's this year and grounded out as a pinch hitter in his only at-bat. He is a career .249 hitter with 42 home runs and 157 RBI in 318 games.
