A's sign Sweeney to minor league dealOakland, CA (Sports Network) - The Oakland A's signed former All-Star Mike Sweeney to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training Monday. Sweeney batted .260 with seven home runs and 38 runs batted in with the Kansas City Royals in 2007. He was limited to 74 games, however, and spent two months on the disabled list with right knee inflammation.
The 34-year old Sweeney is a .299 career hitter with 197 home runs and 837 RBI
over 13 big league seasons, all with Kansas City. He was a five-time All-Star with the Royals (2000-03, 2005) and leaves Kansas City ranked second in club history in home runs, third in batting and fifth in RBI. Sweeney is expected to compete for playing time at first base and designated hitter for Oakland.
