Cards option Thompson, recall infielder Ryan

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals recalled infielder Brendan Ryan from a rehab assignment Wednesday and activated him from the 15-day disabled list.

To make room on the roster, the club also optioned pitcher Brad Thompson to Triple-A Memphis. Thompson appeared in six games -- two starts -- and had a 1-1 record with a 4.58 earned run average this season.

Ryan played in four games with Double-A Springfield, where he batted .368 with three doubles and a homer. He saw action in 67 games with St. Louis last season, batting .289 with four homers and nine doubles in the span.
