Cubs place Eyre on DL; activate Ascanio

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs placed Scott Eyre on the 15- day disabled list Saturday with a left groin strain. The move is retroactive to June 27.

Eyre has gone 2-0 with a 4.91 earned-run average in 18 relief appearances for Chicago this season.

To replace Eyre on the roster, the Cubs have called up pitcher Jose Ascanio, who will be available for Saturday's game against the White Sox.

Ascanio, 23, appeared in four games earlier this year for Chicago from May 20-28, posting a 1.80 ERA in five innings pitched. The right-hander was obtained by the Cubs in December 2007 from the Braves in exchange for Will Ohman and Omar Infante.
