Cubs place Zambrano on DLChicago, IL (Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs placed starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a minor strain in his right shoulder. The right-hander was lifted after surrendering seven hits and five runs -- four earned -- over 6 2/3 frames on Wednesday, a 5-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. He departed the contest after getting B.J. Upton to ground into a double play, but he was clearly favoring his right shoulder.
It will be Zambrano's second-career stint on the DL with the first coming in
2002 when his was out for almost a month with a right elbow strain. Through 16 starts this season, Zambrano is 8-3 with a 3.13 earned run average. In a related move, the Cubs have recalled infielder Eric Patterson from Triple-A Iowa. The 25-year-old had two prior stints with the club this year and his hitting .143 with two RBI in five games.
