D'Backs sign top pickPhoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks signed pitcher Daniel Schlereth, their first round pick in the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, on Thursday. Schlereth, 22, went 2-0 with a 1.81 earned run average for the University of Arizona with 20 walks and 76 strikeouts in 34 games, as he helped lead the Wildcats to the NCAA Super Regionals.
For his career, the left-hander was 8-2 with a 2.98 ERA and 16 saves. "We are very happy to announce the signing of Daniel," said Tom Allison, D'Backs' director of scouting. "He is a pitcher with a real good major league caliber arm and we feel he can be a productive piece of our club in the future. He will join our minor league club in Missoula and start his journey to the major leagues." Schlereth's father, Mark, played 12 seasons in the NFL for the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos, winning three Super Bowls, and is currently an NFL analyst for ESPN.
