Dodgers' Furcal to undergo back surgeryHouston, TX (Sports Network) - Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal will undergo surgery on a bulging disc in his lower back, according to the team's website on Wednesday. The injury has kept Furcal on the disabled list since May 6. The shortstop attempted to come back from the injury, even playing in a Triple-A game last week, but woke up the next day sore and has decided on surgery that will keep sidelined for a substantial portion of the season.
He is expected to miss a minimum of eight weeks. In 32 games this season, Furcal is batting .366 with five home runs, 16 RBI and 34 runs scored. The Dodgers don't have many options to fill the gap at short, with Angel Berroa batting .183 since his acquisition from the Kansas City Royals and rookie Luis Maza not hitting much better at a .239 average.
