Former Dodger great Podres dies

Glens Falls, NY (Sports Network) - Former Brooklyn Dodgers great Johnny Podres died Sunday night at Glens Falls Hospital in New York. He was 75 years old.

Various media reports said Podres died from complications surrounding a leg infection.

Podres pitched the Brooklyn Dodgers to their only World Series title in 1955, as the lefty twirled an eight-hit shutout in a 2-0 Dodger victory over the New York Yankees in the seventh game of that Fall Classic. He won two games during the 1955 Series and was selected as the MVP.

A four-time All-Star, Podres posted a career record of 148-116 in 15 big league seasons with the Dodgers, Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres. He retired at age 36 in 1969 and went on to a successful career as a pitching coach.

Podres is survived by his wife, Joan, and two sons.
