Giants deny Maddux of win no. 350, then beat Padres in 13

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Fred Lewis and Aaron Rowand singled in runs in the 13th inning, and the Giants escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom half of the frame to hold on for a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

Greg Maddux was in line for his landmark 350th career victory, but Bengie Molina homered in the ninth inning off Trevor Hoffman to spoil the milestone.

The Giants then took the lead in the 13th when Emmanuel Burriss doubled and scored on a Lewis base hit to left-center field. Two outs later and after Molina was intentionally walked, Rowand singled to left for a 3-1 advantage.

"It was a great opportunity," Burriss said. "Whatever they need, I try my best to get it done."

It proved to be a big run, as Brian Wilson allowed a single to Scott Hairston, walked Adrian Gonzalez and gave up a base hit to Kevin Kouzmanoff to start the bottom half. Pinch-hitter Colt Morton lofted a fly ball to center to get one run in, but Khalil Greene flied out to center, and after Josh Bard walked to re-load the bases, Tadhahito Iguchi bounced into a force play to end the game.

Keiichi Yabu (2-1) got the win by throwing two-thirds of an inning, and Glendon Rusch (0-2) suffered the loss.

Rowand had three hits for the Giants, who snapped a two-game skid.

It was the second straight home game the Padres went deep into extra innings. They lost a 22-inning marathon to the Rockies last Thursday, and all told those two games combined have lasted over 10 hours.

The Padres have dropped three in a row and seven of their last eight games.

"It was a good ball game, well pitched on both sides, but they got the hits at the end and we didn't," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Maddux threw seven shutout innings, giving up four hits. He struck out five without allowing a walk and remains on the cusp of becoming the ninth member of the 350-win club.

It was another sparkling performance for Maddux against the Giants, as the four-time Cy Young Award winner hasn't lost to them since May 9, 2003.

Heath Bell worked the eighth inning and left a runner stranded at second base, but Hoffman blew it in the ninth thanks to Molina's one-out blast to left field in the opener of the two-game series.

Brian Giles had an RBI with a single in the fifth inning for San Diego.

Matt Cain, who faced the Padres and Maddux on April 7, an 8-4 Padres victory, yielded five hits, walked three and struck out seven over seven innings.

Iguchi singled with one out in the fifth and Maddux followed with a base hit. Giles then squirted a single up the middle to get Iguchi home.

The Giants did have their chances with runners in scoring position early, getting a runner to second base in each of the first four innings, but came up empty.

Game Notes

Tim Lincecum (3-1) will start Thursday's game for the Giants, while Chris Young (1-1) toes the rubber for San Diego...The Giants beat the Padres for just the fourth time in the last 15 meetings.
