Jeter out with quad strainKansas City, MO (Sports Network) - A left quad strain will sideline New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter for at least one game, if not longer. Jeter left Monday's 6-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays after the second inning with the injury. He beat out a close play at first base to reach on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first inning, then scored on Bobby Abreu's two-run homer. Jeter was in the field in the top of the second inning and recorded an assist, but did not take the field in the top of the third.
The 33-year-old was replaced at short by Wilson Betemit, who had started
the game at first base. Morgan Ensberg took Betemit's spot at first and
batted second in the New York lineup in place of Jeter. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said after the game that Jeter will not be in the lineup when New York takes on the Royals on Tuesday. His status for the rest of the week is uncertain. An MRI taken during the game did not show anything more than a strain, which Jeter said he originally suffered Sunday afternoon. The shortstop has batted .208 with three runs scored and one run batted in while starting all seven games this season. The Yankees open a three-game series in Kansas City on Tuesday.
