Nats activate Cordero from DL, option BergmannWashington, DC (Sports Network) - The Washington Nationals reinstated closer Chad Cordero from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday, following the club's 10-2 loss to Atlanta. Cordero was placed on the DL with right shoulder tendinitis on April 4, retroactive to March 27. The 26-year-old right-hander has not appeared in a game this season, though made two rehab appearances with single-A Potomac of the Carolina League, throwing a total of two scoreless innings.
The Nationals also optioned right-handed pitcher Jason Bergmann to triple-A
Columbus of the International League. Bergmann is 0-1 with an 11.68 ERA in
three games -- two starts -- this season. Cordero saved 37 games for the Nationals in 2007, posting a 3.36 earned run average in 76 games. The 20th overall pick in the 2003 draft, Cordero has compiled 128 saves and a 2.79 ERA in 299 relief appearances over five seasons with the Washington/Montreal franchise.
