Orioles' Baez opts for elbow surgeryBaltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Baltimore Orioles reliever Danys Baez will miss the remainder of the season after electing to have "Tommy John" surgery to repair a partially torn right elbow ligament. According to the team's website, Baez made the decision late Tuesday night. He had also been considering a rehab program to avoid surgery.
The operation will likely keep Baez sidelined for all of the 2008 season and
makes him the fourth Baltimore pitcher -- along with Kris Benson, Adam Loewen
and Chris Ray -- to require season-ending surgery. Baez, who has been sidelined since September 12, went 0-6 with a 6.44 ERA and had three saves in 53 appearances this year. He is due to make $4.5 million next season, the second year of a three-year contract.
