Ortiz to begin rehab assignment

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was sent to Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday to begin a rehabilitation assignment.

Ortiz has been on the disabled list since June 3 with a partially torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, which he sustained on May 31 against Baltimore when he fouled off a pitch.

He is expected to play for Pawtucket for three games and then play for Double-A Portland for three more games before joining Boston on July 25.

The 32-year-old Dominican native is batting .252 with 13 homers and 43 RBI in 54 games with the Red Sox this season.
