Phillips, Reds hang on to down GiantsSan Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Brandon Phillips drove in three runs as the Cincinnati Reds downed the San Francisco Giants, 10-9, in the second test of a three-game set at AT&T Park. Jeff Keppinger went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while Paul Bako added a solo home run and two RBI for the Reds, who snapped a three-game slide.
Matt Belisle (1-1) got the win as he gave up four runs on five hits in five
innings of work. Fred Lewis went 3-for-4 with a triple, solo home run and three runs scored while Eugenio Velez went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Giants, who had won three straight coming into the game. Kevin Correia started on the mound, but left the game with a left oblique pull after recording just one out. Brad Hennessey (1-1) took over on the mound and gave up three runs on six hits in three innings of work to take the loss. The Reds got on the board in the first thanks to an RBI single from Phillips that plated Keppinger for a 1-0 lead. San Francisco answered in the bottom of the frame, though, as Lewis led off with a triple and Velez followed with a ground out to chase the runner home. The Giants got another runner across in the second thanks to an RBI single from Hennessey that scored Emmanuel Burriss to make it a 2-1 game. Cincinnati regained the lead in the third as Corey Patterson scored on a wild pitch and Phillips brought home Keppinger with a double to left for a 3-2 lead. San Francisco, though, tied the contest in the third on a ground out from Aaron Rowand which allowed Velez to score and make it a 3-3 game. Cincinnati took a 4-3 lead in the fourth as Joey Votto led off with a double and scampered home on a single from Bako, and added another run in the fifth on Edwin Encarnacion's RBI double that scored Adam Dunn for a 5-3 advantage. San Francisco got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Lewis led off the inning with a shot over the right field fence, but Cincinnati answered in the sixth as Bako led off with a home run and Ryan Freel later scored on a Phillips fielder's choice for a 7-4 advantage. The Giants made it a 7-5 game in the sixth on a Rich Aurilia solo homer past the left field wall. However, the Reds padded their lead in the seventh with three runs. Freel hit a double to center that scored Encarnacion and Patterson followed with a fielder's choice that allowed Votto to come home. Keppinger then reached first on a throwing error to Jose Castillo and Freel scored for a 10-5 lead. Todd Coffey came on the mound to close out the game, but got into trouble. Steve Holm led off with a double and was brought home on a Castillo double. After Lewis walked, Velez belted a two-run triple to center. Francisco Cordero then took the mound and got Randy Winn to ground out, which scored Velez to make it a one-run game. But Cordero got Dan Ortmeier to ground out and Ray Durham to ground out to end the game. Game Notes Cincinnati's Ken Griffey Jr. remains three home runs shy of 600 for his career...San Francisco had won three straight against the Reds...The Reds stranded 12 runners on base...Attendance was 34,215.
