Pierzynski named AL Player of the WeekNew York, NY (Sports Network) - Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski was selected as the American League's top player for the first week of the 2008 season. Pierzynski batted .500 with 10 hits in 20 at-bats, connected for two home runs, drove in seven runs and scored seven times as the White Sox went 4-2 last week. He also registered a 1.000 slugging percentage in earning his first weekly honor.
The two-time All-Star was 6-for-12 against Cleveland to start the season, then
went 4-for-8 with five RBI in two games against Detroit. Others considered for the AL's first weekly award were White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye, who batted .417 with four doubles and two homers; Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick, who hit .444; and Yankees pitcher Chien-Ming Wang, who was 2-0 with a 1.38 earned run average.
