Pirates call up RHP SalasSt. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Marino Salas from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the club optioned righthander John Van Benschoten to their Triple-A affiliate.
Salas, 27, was acquired from Milwaukee in exchange for Salomon Torres on
December 7, and has no major league experience. The righty reliever went 2-0
with two saves and a 0.77 earned run average in 14 appearances with Indy this
season. Van Benschoten was demoted to the minors after losing to Atlanta on Monday. The 28-year-old surrendered nine hits and six runs in four innings, raising his ERA to 9.39 and dropping his record to 0-2 on the season.
