Pirates place Capps on the shelfCincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates put closer Matt Capps on the 15-day disabled list with bursitis in his right shoulder. The 23-year-old is expected to miss eight weeks, however, at this point surgery does not seem to be necessary. Capps will begin rehab in order to loosen up his shoulder.
Capps, a seventh-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2002, first felt the discomfort
following Tuesday's game. In 37 games this season, Capps is 2-3 with 17 saves and an ERA of 3.12. The right-handed Capps appeared in a team-high 76 games in 2007, totaling 18 saves and a 2.28 earned run average. He had only two blown saves, compiling the fifth-best ratio in the majors after June 1. The Pirates have not called anyone up yet to fill Capps' spot on the roster. As far as the void in the closer role, the Pirates are expected to look at their options on a day-by-day basis with Tyler Yates and Damaso Marte as two logical closers.
