Rays sign Kazmir to extension

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays and pitcher Scott Kazmir have agreed to a four-year contract extension on Wednesday. The pact covers the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons with a club option for 2012.

The contract guarantees the Rays' all-time wins and strikeouts leader $28.5 million and has a maximum value of approximately $39.5 million.

The 24-year-old holds a 36-30 career record and a 3.63 earned run average in 100 games, including 99 starts. Kazmir has struck out 628 batters in just 580 2/3 innings.
