Report: Edmonds expected to sign with Cubs

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Veteran outfielder Jim Edmonds is expected to sign with the Chicago Cubs.

According to a Chicago newspaper, Edmonds could be signed as early as Wednesday night, pending his passing of a physical. If he passes, Edmonds could be in the lineup for Thursday's series finale against San Diego.

The 37-year-old, who was acquired by the Padres in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals in December, was batting just .178 with one home run and six RBI in 26 games this season before the club released him last Friday.

In parts of 16 big league seasons with the Angels (1993-99), Cardinals (2000-07) and Padres (2008), the four-time All-Star amassed a career batting average of .286 with 363 homers and 1,127 RBI.

Known as one of the best defensive outfielders in the game, Edmonds also won eight Gold Glove awards between 1997 and 2005.
