Rockies ink IF Giles to minor league deal


Denver, CO (Sports Network) - The Colorado Rockies have agreed to a minor league contract with infielder Marcus Giles, the club announced Tuesday. The deal also includes an invitation to major league spring training.

Giles hit .229 (96-for-420) in 116 games with the San Diego Padres last season. He appeared in 112 games, making 106 starts at second base while recording a career-best .987 fielding percentage.

Selected in the 53rd round in the 1996 June draft by Atlanta, Giles has a .277 career batting average with 76 home runs, 187 doubles and 333 RBI with the Braves and Padres. His 163 doubles also rank fourth among big league second baseman in the last five years.
