Smoak on the water, Rangers sign first-round selectionArlington, TX (Sports Network) - The Texas Rangers signed first baseman Justin Smoak, the 11th overall pick in the 2008 draft, just prior to the midnight (et) deadline on Friday. No financial terms were disclosed, per club policy. A switch-hitter, the 21-year-old Smoak batted .383 with 23 home runs, 72 RBI and 63 runs scored as a junior for South Carolina last season. Smoak was MVP of the Raleigh Regional of the 2008 NCAA Tournament after batting .467 with two home runs and six RBI.
The first baseman also posted a .993 career fielding percentage, committing
just 12 errors.
