Popovich receives contract extension

San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - The San Antonio Spurs have extended the contract of head coach Gregg Popovich through the 2011-12 season.

Popovich is in his 12th year as coach of the Spurs. He has guided San Antonio to four NBA championships, including a title last season.

Since Popovich has been at the helm, the Spurs have appeared in the playoffs 11 times and have held home court advantage in the first round each time. He is now 10-1 in the first round of playoff series, but the Spurs find themselves in a current 3-1 hole to the Lakers in the Western Conference finals with Game 6 slated for Thursday in Los Angeles.

The 59-year-old Popovich is 634-302 during the regular season. He was named the 2003 NBA Coach of the Year.
