Boston College names Crawley women's basketball coach

Chestnut Hill, MA (Sports Network) - Boston College named Sylvia Crawley head women's basketball coach on Tuesday.

Crawley was the head coach at Ohio University. She replaces Cathy Inglese, who resigned earlier this month.

The head coach at Ohio since 2006, Crawley has signed a five-year contract, becoming the sixth head coach in the history of Boston College women's basketball.

"This is an exciting day for BC women's basketball," said athletic director Gene DeFilippo. "Sylvia Crawley has enjoyed phenomenal success both as a player and as a coach. As a North Carolina graduate, she knows the ACC inside and out. We are very fortunate to have her as our new coach."

Crawley led the Bobcats to a 20-13 record this season, the first time the program earned 20 wins since 1994-95. She replaces Inglese, who led the Eagles to a 21-12 record and a fifth-place showing in the Atlantic Coast Conference this past season. Inglese posted eight 20-win seasons and made seven NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 10 years.

Prior to Ohio, Crawley spent the 2005-06 season as the top assistant at Fordham University. Crawley then stepped in as the interim head coach when Fordham head coach Jim Lewis retired. Crawley also served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, North Carolina, from 2000-02.

Prior to coaching, Crawley played at both the collegiate and professional levels. Crawley was a member of the 1993-94 national champion North Carolina team. On the professional level, Crawley played in France and Spain from 1994-1996, and later spent two years in Portland in the WNBA. She also played for the San Antonio Silver Stars.

Crawley also played for the USA, earning the silver medal at the World University Games in 1995. She was an alternate for the 1996 Olympic team, which also earned a silver medal.
