California downs San Diego in first round playStanford, CA (Sports Network) - Devanei Hampton poured in a contest-high 22 points, as the third-seeded California Golden Bears handled the 14th-seeded San Diego Toreros, 77-60, in the first round of the Greensboro Region of the NCAA Tournament. Ashley Walker also had a big game with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds for Cal (27-6), which won its first NCAA Tournament game in 15 years and will play sixth-seeded George Washington in the second round.
Sam Child led San Diego (19-13) with 14 points, while Morgan Henderson notched
13 points. Brianna Estell chipped in with 12 points and Kiva Herman had 11
points, as the Toreros were unable to compensate for their 24 turnovers. The Bears opened the game with a 14-2 run and they carried a 42-27 lead to the break. In the second period, Cal shot 41.4 percent from the field and made 10 free throws, as it earned the 17-point victory.
