Huskies hold off ODU

Greensboro, NC (Sports Network) - Maya Moore recorded a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds as the UConn Huskies defeated the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs, 78-63, in the NCAA Tournament's Greensboro Regional Semifinals at Greensboro Coliseum.

Renee Montgomery, who went out with an apparent knee injury late in the second half, posted 13 points for the top-seeded Huskies (35-1) as they advanced to the Elite Eight for the third straight year. Charde Houston, Tina Charles and Brittany Hunter all tallied 10 points for the victors as well.

The Huskies will suit up again on Tuesday night in the regional finals versus the winner of the George Washington/Rutgers contest.

Fifth-seeded ODU (31-5) was paced by Tiffany Green and her 15 points and 10 rebounds. Also producing a double-double for the Monarchs was Jessica Canady with 11 points and 10 boards off the bench, followed by Shahida Williams who tallied 10 points, but shot a mere 5-of-14 from the floor on the afternoon.

Limiting the Monarchs to just 2-of-10 shooting behind the three-point line in the first half, UConn moved out to a double-digit lead a little over seven minutes into the contest and then settled in for a 43-33 edge at the break.

The Huskies put together a 20-1 run early on in the second half, giving the team some breathing room and allowing it to cruise to the 15-point win.

However, UConn was far from perfect down the stretch, unable to record a single field goal for nearly the final 10 minutes of the contest. In fact, following a three-point field goal by Montgomery at the 9:54 mark, the Huskies managed to post just six points the rest of the way.

Charles, who added eight rebounds in just 19 minutes off the bench for the Huskies, suffered what appeared to be a shoulder injury late in the second half and did not return for a squad that forced a total of 15 turnovers and outscored ODU in the paint, 36-24.
