Longhorns come from behind, beat Cyclones in OT


Ames, IA (Sports Network) - A.J. Abrams scored 25 points and grabbed five rebounds, as twelfth-ranked Texas rallied for a 71-65 overtime win over Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum.

D.J. Augustin added 17 points and three assists for the Longhorns (19-4, 6-2 Big 12), who have now won three in a row. Gary Johnson also pitched in 15 points and nine rebounds for Texas.

Jiri Hubalek scored 24 points and pulled down nine boards for the Cyclones (13-11, 3-6), who have now lost three in a row.

In overtime, no one scored for the first few minutes until the Longhorns took a 64-62 lead on a Johnson layup with 2:51 remaining. Texas held on from there, as Augustin made a jumper with 43 seconds left for a four-point Longhorns lead. Texas made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the game.

Texas jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but Iowa State hung in tough and tied the game at 12-12 when Hubalek hit a three-pointer with 11:11 to go in the first half.

However, the lead went back and forth throughout the first half until there was 2:19 to go. The Cyclones scored the final six points to take a 31-27 lead into the break.

Iowa State then went on an 11-2 run to start the second half, taking control of a close game. Hubalek had eight points, including a pair of free throws just under four minutes into the period to cap the surge, and put the Cyclones ahead, 42-29.

The Cyclones held a double-digit lead until the midway point, when Texas drew back in the game on a 12-5 run. Abrams drained a three to cap it with 6:53 left, bringing the Longhorns within 53-49.

Texas made the comeback complete with 4:21 remaining, when Augustin hit a pair of free throws to tie the game for the first time since 2:19 in the first half, at 55 points apiece.

The teams traded baskets for the remainder of regulation. Hubalek made two free throws with 36 seconds left, tying the game at 62-62, and sending the game into overtime.

Game Notes

The last time Iowa State beat a ranked opponent was February 19, 2005 against Kansas...Texas shot 35.7 percent from the field...Iowa State shot 36.5 percent from the field.
