Love, UCLA shut down CalBerkeley, CA (Sports Network) - Kevin Love finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds as fifth-ranked UCLA pulled away from California to win, 70-58, at Haas Pavilion. Darren Collison scored 14 and handed out five assists, and Josh Shipp chipped in with 13 points for UCLA (14-1, 2-0 Pac-10), which won its seventh in a row. Russell Westbrook scored 11 off the bench in the win.
Ryan Anderson scored 12 and had eight rebounds for Cal (10-3, 1-1), which had
a three-game winning streak snapped. Patrick Christopher had 11 points, the
only other player in double-figures for the Golden Bears, who were held to
below 60 points for the first time this season. A DeVon Hardin dunk brought Cal within five, at 50-45, with time running down in the second half. But UCLA seized the momentum as Luc Richard Mbah a Moute followed with a dunk, and Shipp drew an intentional foul on Christopher while driving to the hoop with 5:49 left. As Shipp ran to the right side of the hoop, Christopher ran all of his body weight directly into him. Shipp wasn't knocked down, but still earned two foul shots and possession. He made both free throws, and a jumper on the ensuing possession to put the Bruins up 56-45 with 5:46 left. That proved to be the back-breaker for Cal, as the Bears didn't get closer than eight points for the rest of the game. UCLA started the game with a 13-2 run in which Love had five points and Shipp had six, and ended the surge with a three-point play just 3:32 into the game. That was enough cushion to keep the Bruins ahead for the entirety of the first half, and take a 36-25 lead at intermission. Cal climbed back, though, with an 11-2 run to start the second half. Hardin had five points, including a three-point play on a dunk, with 14:15 left in the game, to bring the Golden Bears within 38-36, and the margin stayed within a few possessions until the end. Game Notes Cal shot 36.2 percent for the game, while UCLA had a 45 percent mark...The Golden Bears averaged 84.2 points per game coming into the contest...UCLA had a 43-30 rebounding advantage, and had 34 points in the paint, to Cal's 22.
