Rutgers survives scare, but holds off MarquetteMilwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Epiphanny Prince tallied 17 points and also grabbed eight rebounds as the fifth-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights held off Marquette, 65-61. Essence Carson added 17 points and seven boards off the bench for Rutgers (12-2, 2-0 Big East), which is riding a seven-game winning streak, its longest of the season. The Scarlet Knights opened Big East play on Saturday with a victory over St. John's, 58-50.
Senior guard Matee Ajavon also had 14 points and seven rebounds in the win. Krystal Ellis and Angel Robinson poured in 15 and 13 points off the bench, respectively for the Golden Eagles (9-6, 1-1), who had a two-game win streak halted. Marquette failed to score over the final 6:20, while Rutgers pulled ahead on five free throws by Prince for a lead with a little more than four minutes to play. Carson then nailed two free throws to ice the victory.
