UConn remains atop women's pollNew York, NY (Sports Network) - Connecticut remained the top team in the latest Associated Press women's college basketball poll. The Huskies are atop the rankings for the third straight week and for the 10th time in the last 11 weeks. Only a one-week stint by Tennessee interrupted the streak.
UConn received 40 first-place votes, one more than last week, and a total of
1,235 points from a nationwide media panel. The rest of the top five remains unchanged, with North Carolina, Tennessee, Rutgers and Maryland following the top-ranked Huskies. Carolina received two first-place votes, while Rutgers got the other eight nods. Stanford, LSU, Baylor, Notre Dame and California round out the top 10, despite the fact both Baylor and Cal were upset by conference foes over the weekend. The second 10 consists of Oklahoma, Duke, George Washington, West Virginia, Utah, Old Dominion, Texas A&M, UTEP, Kansas State and Oklahoma State. Old Dominion, ranked 11th in last week's poll, had a 19-game win streak halted by James Madison on Sunday and fell four spots. The last five teams ranked this week are Vanderbilt, Ohio State, Georgia, Marist and Virginia. Marist, which joined the rankings for the first time in school history a week ago, defeated St. Peter's twice to extend its winning streak to 18 games. Virginia is the only new arrival to the poll, replacing Wyoming.
