Arkansas hoping to get Mallett eligible for 2008

Fayetteville, AR (Sports Network) - The University of Arkansas intends to file a waiver on the behalf of quarterback Ryan Mallett in an effort to make the transfer from Michigan eligible for 2008.

Mallett transferred from Michigan to Arkansas after Rich Rodriguez was named the new coach in Ann Arbor. Under NCAA rules, Mallett is required to sit out a year.

"After visiting with Ryan and his parents, we feel that it is appropriate to file a waiver in this case based on extenuating circumstances," said Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long. "While the outcome of the waiver request is uncertain, we feel strongly that as an institution we should offer our full support to Ryan and his family in this process."

Mallett transferred because he believed he wouldn't fit Rodriguez's spread offense with Michigan. He still has three years of eligibility remaining, but wants to play in 2008.

The Texarkana, Arkansas native appeared in 11 games as a true freshman for the Wolverines, filling in at times for injured starter Chad Henne. He completed 61-of-141 passes for 892 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.
