Georgia State tabs Curry as first head coachAtlanta, GA (Sports Network) - The Georgia State Panthers have chosen Bill Curry as its first football coach, according to the Atlanta Journal- Constitution. The school has a news conference scheduled for Thursday at 1:30 p.m. (et).
Georgia State president Carl Patton announced in April that the university
will undertake a football program. The Panthers will play at the NCAA Football
Championship Subdivision level, formerly known as NCAA Division I-AA, and will
play its first season in 2010. Georgia State will also remain in the Colonial
Athletic Association and play its home games at the Georgia Dome. The program
will begin to recruit players in the fall. The 65-year-old Curry played at Georgia Tech and graduated in 1965 with a degree in industrial management. Curry then moved on to the NFL, where he played from 1965-74 with Green Bay, Houston, Baltimore and Los Angeles. A two-time Super Bowl champion with the Packers (1967) and Colts (1971), Curry spent three seasons as an assistant at Green Bay after retiring. Curry coached at Georgia Tech from 1980-86, where he compiled a record of 31-43-4. He was named the ACC Coach of the Year in 1985 after a 9-2-1 campaign. Curry then spent three years at Alabama (1987-89), guiding the program to the SEC Championship in 1989 and getting National Coach of the Year honors. He coached at Kentucky from 1990-96 and was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
