Astros call up Borkowski; designate Villarreal for assignment

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Astros on Wednesday called up pitcher Dave Borkowski from Round Rock to stabilize the bullpen.

The 31-year-old Borkowski last appeared for the Astros on May 25 against Philadelphia, and has a record of 0-2 with a 6.86 earned run average in 18 appearances in 2008. For his career, the right-hander is 13-20 with a 5.76 ERA in 173 games.

The team designated reliever Oscar Villarreal for assignment to make room for Borkowski. Villarreal was 1-3 on the season with a 5.02 ERA and had given up 12 home runs in 37 2/3 innings pitched. He was acquired in a trade earlier this year from the Braves in exchange for outfielder Josh Anderson.
