South Florida gives Leavitt contract extension through 2014Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - South Florida head football coach Jim Leavitt agreed to a contract extension through 2014 on Monday, according to director of athletics Doug Woolard. The only coach in the history of the program, Leavitt has a 79-47 record over 11 seasons. "We're pleased to enter into an agreement with Jim Leavitt that secures him as our head football coach through 2014," said Woolard. "What his leadership has accomplished is unmatched in the country with regards to beginning and developing a nationally recognized football program. Our football program continues to be a great catalyst for helping to brand the University of South Florida and for bringing positive recognition to the entire Tampa Bay area." This past season, the Bulls were ranked most of the time and even rose to No. 2 before losing at Rutgers on October 18. They had a final record of 9-4, and capped the campaign with a 56-21 loss to Oregon in the Sun Bowl. Under the new deal, Leavitt's annual compensation will go up to $1.5 million in 2008. No state funds were used in the increase.
