Chargers sign veteran C Newberry

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - The San Diego Chargers have signed veteran center Jeremy Newberry to a one-year contract, the team announced Monday.

"Jeremy is a tough, physical, experienced player," said Chargers general manager A.J. Smith. "He brings additional veteran leadership to the Chargers. He has always been a top-level competitor and we are pleased that he will be a part of our team."

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Newberry started 14 games for the Oakland Raiders in 2007 as part of an offensive line that paved the road for 2,086 rushing yards, sixth-most in the NFL.

A 10-year veteran, Newberry spent nine years with the San Francisco 49ers before originally signing with the Chargers in 2006. However, he missed the 2006 season with a knee injury and moved on to Oakland.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection has started 104 games in the NFL and has spent some time at guard and tackle in addition to his primary duty as a center.
