Dolphins fire Cameron

Davie, FL (Sports Network) - The Miami Dolphins fired head coach Cam Cameron and most of his assistants Thursday after a dismal 1-15 season, the worst in team history.

Cameron spent just one season in South Beach after arriving from San Diego, where he spent the previous five campaigns orchestrating the Chargers' potent offense. That success didn't follow Cameron across the country and he was axed by the Dolphins' new football boss, Bill Parcells, and brand new general manager, Jeff Ireland.

Parcells began work as Miami's executive vice president of football operations on December 27 and hired Ireland as the team's general manager on Wednesday. The two then acted quickly in dismissing Cameron.

"This is a difficult decision, and I want to thank Cam and the rest of his staff for their work this past season," said Ireland. "By making this decision now, it gives all of the coaches the greatest chance to pursue other opportunities."

Cameron was the head coach of Indiana University for five years prior to joining the Chargers. He compiled just an 18-37 record at his alma mater, however, including a 12-28 mark in the Big Ten.

The Chapel Hill, North Carolina native began his NFL coaching career with the Washington Redskins, serving under Norv Turner as the quarterbacks coach from 1994-96. There he tutored the likes of Gus Frerotte and Trent Green.

Before moving to the NFL, Cameron was an assistant at the University of Michigan from 1984-93, which included six years under the late Bo Schembechler. He was the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach in 1991 when Wolverines wide receiver Desmond Howard won the Heisman Trophy. During his 10 seasons as an assistant coach for the Wolverines, the program won six Big Ten titles and played in 10 bowl games.

The Dolphins did retain two assistant coaches from Cameron's staff, special teams coach Steve Hoffman and linebackers coach George Edwards.
