Dolphins to release ThomasFt. Lauderdale, FL (Sports Network) - The Miami Dolphins will release Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Thomas, according to a report on Sun-Sentinel.com Thursday. The report stated that Thomas was told by the Dolphins' new management that the 34-year old does not fit into the team's long-term plans and will be released later on Thursday. Thomas is in the last year of his contract, which will pay him just under $6 million, and plans on looking for a new team to continue his career. A fifth round pick by Miami in the 1996 draft, Thomas has led the Dolphins in tackles in 10 of the last 12 seasons. Last season he only appeared in five games due to a concussion and post-concussion symptoms, but did register 52 tackles in those games. Over his 12 seasons in the NFL, all with Miami, the seven-time Pro Bowler has appeared in 168 games and has totaled 1,866 tackles, 19 1/2 sacks and 17 interceptions, four of which he has returned for touchdowns.
