Lions sign TE GainesAllen Park, MI (Sports Network) - The Detroit Lions signed free agent tight end Michael Gaines to a four-year deal and re-signed tight end John Owens to a one-year deal on Monday. Additional terms were not disclosed. Last season, Gaines played in 15 games (14 starts) for Buffalo, which signed him on September 10 after he was released by Carolina. He set career highs with 25 receptions and 215 yards and matched a career high with four touchdowns.
In his three seasons with Carolina, he played in 42 games (21 starts) and had
31 receptions for 335 yards and two touchdowns, primarily playing as a
blocking tight end. Owens was claimed him off waivers by the Lions on November 12 after he was released by New Orleans. He appeared in seven games and had one catch for nine yards with Detroit. In six seasons in the NFL, which also included stops in Chicago and Cleveland, Owens has appeared in 35 games and has 11 catches for 106 yards.
