Panthers release Carr, bring back MuhammadCharlotte, NC (Sports Network) - The Carolina Panthers ended quarterback David Carr's short tenure with the team Tuesday, but also brought one of the franchise's most established veterans back into the fold, signing free agent wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad. Carr played in six games - starting four - during his only season with the Panthers after five years in Houston as the Texans' starting quarterback. In 2007, the Fresno State product completed 73-of-136 passes for 635 yards and three touchdowns, as well as five interceptions.
Carolina started four different quarterbacks - Carr, Jake Delhomme, Vinny
Testaverde and Matt Moore - over the course of the 2007 campaign, all of whom
won at least one game. "This was a very unusual season for us at quarterback," Panthers general manager Marty Hurney admitted. "And David was a part of that. He did everything we asked, but, unfortunately, it didn't work out like anyone had hoped or expected. David is an excellent person, and we wish him the best." Meanwhile, Muhammad rejoins the Panthers after three seasons in Chicago that included a Super Bowl appearance. The 34-year old spent the first nine years of his NFL career with the Panthers, recording over 1,000 yards receiving for Carolina in 1999, 2000 and 2004. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Michigan State product totaled a career-best 1,405 yards and 16 touchdowns on 93 catches during the '04 campaign, which ended with a narrow Super Bowl loss to the Patriots. Muhammad's numbers tailed off somewhat while in Chicago, but the Lansing, Michigan native has still amassed nearly 10,000 receiving yards in his career, catching 742 total passes for 56 touchdowns.
