Patriots release Scott Player

Foxboro, MA (Sports Network) - The New England Patriots have released punter Scott Player, who had signed as a free agent in April.

Player, a 10-year veteran, has played for the Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns. He punted in three games with Cleveland last season before being released on October 8.

The 38-year-old Florida State product spent nine seasons with Arizona and holds most of the Cardinals' punting records. He is the club's leader with 714 punts, 30,752 punting yards and 179 punts downed inside the 20-yard line.

Player was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 1998 season. He owns a career average of 43.1 yards in 143 NFL games.
