Texans shake up offensive staffHouston, TX (Sports Network) - The Houston Texans announced the hiring of Alex Gibbs as their assistant head coach and the promotion of Kyle Shanahan to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Friday. Shanahan, at 28 years and 26 days old becomes the youngest coordinator in the NFL. He replaces Mike Sherman, who left the Texans to take the head coaching job at Texas A&M. Kyle Shanahan worked with Houston's quarterbacks in 2007 as Houston's passing
offense compiled team record totals of 3,925 yards and 24 touchdown passes as
Matt Schaub and Sage Rosenfels split duty under center. Shanahan previously
served as Houston's wide receivers coach in 2006. Gibbs joins the Texans' staff after a three-year stint with the Atlanta Falcons from 2004 to 2006, serving first as Atlanta's assistant head coach/offensive line coach, then as a consultant to head coach Jim Mora, Jr. Gibbs oversaw the NFL's most potent rushing attack during that time, amassing 8,157 yards over three years. Gibbs previously worked with Texans' head coach Gary Kubiak when Kubiak was the Broncos' offensive coordinator from 1995 to 2003. During that period, Gibbs' offensive line used his zone-blocking scheme to pave the road for a league-best 20,150 yards on the ground and two Super Bowl titles.
