McGrane cruises to huge win in ChinaBeijing, China (Sports Network) - Damien McGrane managed just a one-over 73 in wet, windy conditions Sunday, but it was more than enough for him to earn his first European Tour win at the China Open. McGrane completed the event at 10-under-par 274. That was good for a nine- stroke victory as scores soared in Sunday's tough conditions.
The Irishman's 73 tied for the second best score of the day. "It's like a dream come true," McGrane said. "It's been my lifetime's dream to win on the European Tour and having been in it for the long haul, I'm just absolutely delighted." Simon Griffiths posted a two-over 74 that left him at one-under-par 287. He shared second place with Oliver Wilson (79) and 36-hole leader Michael Lorenzo-Vera (79). Markus Brier, the 2007 winner, was joined in fifth place by Mark Brown and Graeme McDowell. Those three ended at even-par 288. McGrane opened with a three-stroke cushion and when Wilson tripped to a bogey on the first, the Irishman's lead was four. That lead briefly dropped back to three when McGrane bogeyed the second at Beijing CBD International Golf Club. McGrane settled in with five straight pars as his lead moved back to four. Another bogey at the eighth left him three clear of Lorenzo-Vera, but no one would get closer the remainder of the round. The 37-year-old McGrane bounced back from that bogey with a chip-in birdie on the ninth. Around the turn, he birdied No. 11 for the second day in a row and suddenly he led by six. McGrane parred the next six holes, but his lead grew to 10 strokes as the other players struggled in the tough conditions. He bogeyed the last to drop his winning margin to nine. Lorenzo-Vera bogeyed the first and fifth, but was only four back at six-under. The first part of the back nine was his downfall though. The Frenchman tripped to a bogey on 11, then double-bogeyed the par-five 13th. He followed with another bogey on 14 to fall nine back at minus-two. For the week, Lorenzo-Vera played the 14th at plus-three with a birdie, a double-bogey and two bogeys. He also bogeyed No. 17 to share second. Wilson was three back at the start of the round, but he bogeyed five of the first six holes en route to a seven-over 79. "At the end of the day, I shot 79 and still tied for second. I should be very, very happy," stated Wilson. "I actually played quite nicely today, but holed nothing." Griffiths carded four bogeys and two birdies in his 74 that left him tied for second. England's John Bickerton posted the round of the day with his even-par 72. That helped him jump from a share of 31st into a tie for 12th.
