Newman easily defeats Chin for Publinx title

Aurora, CO (Sports Network) - Jack Newman pulled away late in Saturday's 36- hole final of the U.S. Amateur Public Links to defeat John Chin, 5 & 3.

Newman never trailed more than 2-down and led 2-up heading to the final nine. He had just taken the 27th hole thanks to Chin's bogey.

The 20-year-old Newman took the 28th with a birdie and made it three straight wins after Chin bogeyed the 29th to fall 4-down.

With a 4-up lead with four holes to go, Newman only needed to halve the 33rd hole to win the match. However, Chin stumbled to a double-bogey after driving into a water hazard and conceded a birdie to Newman, giving him the 5 & 3 win.

Newman tripped to a three-putt bogey on the first to fall 1-down. Chin pushed his early lead to 2-up with a birdie on the fourth.

However, Newman won the fifth thanks to Chin's bogey. Newman squared the match with a birdie on the seventh, and parred the next to go 1-up.

The 21-year-old Chin two-putted for birdie on the ninth to again square the match. Chin birdied the 12th for a win, but Newman took the 14th with a birdie of his own to again square the match.

Newman birdied the par-four 16th from 20 feet out to take a 1-up lead, which he would not give up. The two halved the 17th and 18th.

The second 18 started with Newman taking the 19th with a par. Chin got back within 1-down with a birdie at the 24th. They halved the next three holes before Newman started to pull away.
