Ochoa continues to dominate, leads by seven in Mexico

Morelia, Mexico (Sports Network) - Women's world No. 1 Lorena Ochoa is going for her third straight win.

She moved closer to making that a reality on Saturday as she fired her third consecutive seven-under 66 to move seven shots clear of the field after three rounds of the Corona Championship.

Ochoa completed three rounds with a score of 21-under-par 198. That total smashed her previous 54-hole scoring record here, a 203 when she won in 2006.

The Mexican has won three straight times, and six of seven overall, when holding at least a share of the 54-hole lead. For her career, she is 10-7 in those situations.

"I love where I am. I think it's been a great tournament to me," Ochoa stated. "I've been able to not make bogeys. It's probably my best tournament so far and I'm enjoying it very much."

Inbee Park, who started the day one back, posted a one-under 72 at Tres Marias Residential Golf Club and is alone in second at minus-14.

Song-Hee Kim posted three straight birdies from the sixth to get within one of the lead, but she ended up shooting a 71 which left her at 13-under-par 206.

Ochoa, who owns 20 tour wins, has collected a remarkable 17 titles in the last 24 months.

If she goes on to win this week, she will qualify for the LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame, though she would have to wait until she has played 10 years to actually be inducted.

The Mexican was steady out of the gate with six pars and a birdie over the opening seven holes. At that point, she stood at 16-under and was two clear of the field.

Kim birdied the eighth, her third straight birdie, to briefly move within one of Ochoa.

Ochoa responded with a two-putt birdie on eight. She came right back to birdie nine from 15 feet out and made it three in a row thanks to a two-putt birdie at the 10th.

She wasn't done, either. Ochoa knocked in a 12-foot birdie effort on 11, moving her four clear of the field at 19-under.

After a par on 12, Ochoa birdied the par-three 13th for the third straight day. She parred the next two before kicking in a three-foot birdie putt on the 16th.

Ochoa has parred 17 and 18 all three days, but most of her damage has come at five and 10. She has played those par-fives at minus-eight for the week with two eagles and four birdies.

Even with her big lead, don't expect Ochoa to back off.

"I'm trying to go low, as low as I can," said Ochoa. "Hopefully more than seven. It would be great to finish with the best round on Sunday. I'm going to be aggressive and hopefully everyone enjoys the round."

Park traded a bogey for a birdie from fourth and again from the sixth. Another birdie on the eighth moved Park to 14-under. She was two back at that point.

Around the turn, Park tried to keep pace with birdies on 10 and 12. A birdie on the 17th got her to 17-under. However, Park faltered to a triple-bogey on the par-five closing hole to drop seven back.

She drove into a fairway bunker and tried to play out with a rescue club. That shot hit the lip and bounced back into the bunker. She then blasted out with a sand-wedge and played a six-iron down the fairway. Park knocked her fifth to 50 feet, but three-putted for triple-bogey.

"I'm really frustrated about that last hole and it was tough because it was the last hole," Park explained. "It's already in the past and there's nothing I can do about it. I'm seven strokes back, so that's going to be pretty tough to catch. It would have been easier to come back if I hadn't played that last hole."

Karine Icher matched Ochoa's 66 to move into fourth at 12-under-par 207, while Na Yeon Choi is one shot further back at minus-11.
