'Canes agree to terms with SamsonovRaleigh, NC (Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Wednesday that the club has agreed to terms on a three-year contract worth $7.6 million with forward Sergei Samsonov. The Hurricanes claimed the veteran winger off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks in January after he tallied only four assists in 23 games with Chicago.
Samsonov responded with 14 goals and 32 points in 38 regular-season games for
Carolina, which failed to qualify for the postseason. The deal will pay the speedy Russian $2.3 million next season, then $2.5 million in 2009-2010, and $2.8 million in 2010-11. For his career, the 29-year-old Samsonov has recorded 192 goals and 262 assists over 657 games with Boston, Edmonton, Montreal, Chicago and Carolina. He was selected by the Bruins with the eighth overall pick of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and won the Calder Trophy that season as the league's top rookie.
