Canada hammers Germany, Russia edges Sweden at Worlds


Halifax, Nova Scotia (Sports Network) - Eric Staal scored four goals and added an assist as Canada hammered Germany 10-1 at the 2008 World Hockey Championships.

Martin St. Louis contributed five assists, while Mike Green chipped in with a goal and two helpers for Canada, which stays atop Group F and will next play Finland in the final game of the Qualification Round on Monday. Cam Ward stopped 17-of-18 shots in the win.

Frank Hordler accounted for the lone goal for Germany, which has no points in the Qualification Round.

Alexander Ovechkin scored with five seconds left in the third period, beating Henrik Lundqvist as Russia edged Sweden 3-2.

Russia holds a one-point lead atop Group E.

In the second shootout of the tournament, Radim Vrbata and Ales Kotalik netted goals as the Czech Republic edged Belarus, 3-2 at the 2008 World Hockey Championships.

Tomas Rolinek and Kotalik scored in regulation for the Czechs.

Yaroslav Chupris and Andrei Kostitsyn accounted for the Belarus goals, which was eliminated from quarterfinals play.
