Capitals re-sign FedorovArlington, VA (Sports Network) - The Washington Capitals have re-signed center Sergei Fedorov to a one-year contract. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Fedorov was acquired by the Capitals from Columbus at last season's trade
deadline in February and notched two goals with 11 assists for 13 points in 18
games after the deal. He scored the winning goal in the final game of the
season to give Washington the Southeast Division title and the club's first
playoff berth since 2003. "We are happy to have Sergei back," said Capitals vice president and general manager George McPhee. "What he brings to the club extends beyond the rink. He is a leader and a player that everyone on our team wanted back. We look forward to him helping us compete this upcoming season." The 38-year-old native of Russia finished last season with 11 goals and 30 assists for 41 points in 68 games with the Blue Jackets and Capitals. He added one goal and four assists in seven playoff games, as the Caps lost to the Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Fedorov has averaged nearly a point per game in his NHL career, compiling 1,146 points on 472 goals and 674 assists in 1,196 games with Detroit, Anaheim, Columbus and Washington. He has played in two Olympics and was the first player born and trained in Russia to appear in 1,000 NHL games. The Red Wings selected Fedorov in the fourth round of the 1989 draft. He spent 13 season with Detroit, capturing Stanley Cup titles in 1997, '98 and 2002, while also earning the Hart Trophy as league MVP in 1994. Washington now has three Hart Trophy winners on its roster for next season. Alex Ovechkin won the award last season, while goaltender Jose Theodore received the Hart Trophy after the 2001-02 season.
