Coyotes pick up D MeyerUniondale, NY (Sports Network) - The Phoenix Coyotes picked up defenseman Freddy Meyer off waivers from the New York Islanders on Monday. Meyer was scratched for New York's first two regular-season games against Buffalo, and was placed on waivers Sunday with the purpose of sending him to Bridgeport of the AHL.
However, the Coyotes acted quickly to snap up the young backliner before the
24-hour deadline expired to replace defenseman Zbynek Michalek, who is out of
action 4-to-6 weeks due to a broken hand. The Islanders acquired Meyer and a conditional third-round draft pick from the Philadelphia Flyers, in exchange for defenseman Alexei Zhitnik last December 16. Meyer struggled with back troubles last season, recording just two goals and eight points in 60 games with the Flyers and Islanders. The 26-year-old Boston University product netted six goals and picked up 21 assists in 57 games two years ago as a rookie for Philadelphia.
