Coyotes re-sign MontoyaGlendale, AZ (Sports Network) - The Phoenix Coyotes re-signed goaltender Al Montoya, general manager Don Maloney announced Wednesday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Montoya, 23, was acquired from the New York Rangers along with forward Marcel Hossa for forwards Fredrik Sjostrom, Josh Gratton and goaltender David LeNeveu on February 26 and spent all of last season in the minors.
The University of Michigan product was 8-6-0 with a 2.59 goals-against average
and .912 save percentage in 14 games for Phoenix's American Hockey League
affiliate in San Antonio. Montoya was 16-8-3 with a 2.54 GAA and .908 save
percentage with the Rangers' AHL affiliate in Hartford before the trade. Drafted sixth overall by the Rangers in the 2004 draft, Montoya has yet to appear in an NHL game. In 133 career AHL contests, he has posted a record of 74-40-4 with a 2.47 GAA, .910 save percentage and eight shutouts. In 2004, Montoya backstopped Team USA to its first-ever gold medal at the World Junior Championship. In addition, Phoenix re-signed left wing David Spina, a native of nearby Mesa. The club also signed right wing Derek Nesbitt and defenseman Drew Fata.
