Hurricanes agree to terms with Gleason, acquire Hordichuk

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes agreed to terms with defenseman Tim Gleason on a four-year contract Thursday.

The deal will pay the young backliner $2 million for the next season, $2.5 million in 2009-10, $3 million the following campaign, then $3.5 million for the final year in 2011-12.

Gleason finished his fourth NHL campaign by posting three goals and 19 points over a career-best 80 contests. He led all Hurricanes defensemen with 107 blocked shots.

A native of Michigan, the 25-year-old has seven goals, 53 points and 239 penalty minutes over 262 games with Los Angeles and Carolina.

In another move, the club acquired the rights to forward Darcy Hordichuk from the Nashville Predators. To complete the deal, Nashville received a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2009 draft.

If Carolina fails to sign Hordichuk, who is an unrestricted free agent, before the start of the upcoming season, it will receive Nashville's fifth-round pick in 2010.

Hordichuk, 27, posted one goal and three points with 60 penalty minutes in 45 games for the Predators in 2007-08. Over parts of seven seasons with four clubs, the Saskatchewan native has posted 13 goals, 26 points and 747 penalty minutes in 302 games.
